Ina Coolbrith (1841-1928) was a poet, writer, librarian, and a prominent and beloved figure in the San Francisco Bay Area literary community. Coolbrith contributed articles to the influential magazine, the Overland Monthly, and published her poetry widely. Her literary work led to her friendship with Alfred Tennyson, Samuel Clemens, Bret Harte, Charles Warren Stoddard, Joaquin Miller, and Ansel Adams amongst other influential literary and cultural figures. In 1915 Coolbrith was named the first poet laureate of California by the Regents of the University of California.
Eunice Lehmer (Clara Eunice Mitchell), wife of Derrick Norman Lehmer, professor in mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, was active in promoting the California literary and cultural scene. She became Vice-Chairman, and later Chairman, of the California Writers' Club, Woodminster Committee of the Woodminster Amphitheater and Memorial Grove in Joaquin Miller Park, Oakland, California.
